Speak Out!

The War in Iraq

Sun, 04/13/2008 - 10:46 | Tavis Talks
Iraq has faded dramatically on all the network newscasts, except for a brief "comeback" after the 4,000th American died in the war and renewed fighting broke out in Basra and, again, following the update from Gen. Petraeus. Have people in the U.S. lost interest in the Iraq war, in deference to other issues, such as the economy and the presidential race?

Good Evening Mr.

Good Evening Mr. Smiley,

Thank you for all YOU do to keep me and our people informed...if only more would listen to the message and not judge the messenger. I retired from active duty, coming out of Saudi Arabia, shortly after this president's "Declaration of Mission Accomplished". Keith Olberman says it better than I can.

Those of us who were there on the ground in the Middle East knew this was premature, but of course, being in the uniform, we could say nothing...and even the Generals who spoke up, as you know, were not listened to. This unfortunate war is not over by any means, nor is it forgotten by the people.

The reason why the attention has played down is because this administration and big media says so, and ultimately people assume it is gospel. I am reminded every day of what I went thru over there for over 20 months, from 20 Sep 2001 until 10 May 2003. I currently work on Ft. Bragg so I see many of the combat patches that return home, and I walk up to them and say "Welcome Home, Brother/Sister", no matter race, color or what-have-you.

My earlier comment - message from messenger - I hope you know where I'm coming from. You are the messenger and your message is what we need to hear. As long as we have positive people like you, bringing it correct, this unfortunate war will never be forgotten.

I for one, certainly won't let it. I still have thousands of brothers and sisters over there, or soon going. And I pray they return the same way as they went - Walking, Talking and With Love, Hope and Charity in their hearts.

My message is, don't let this administration and big media tell us what's important in our lives and get us off track of thinking for ourselves.

Yes, I believe the Iraq war

Yes, I believe the Iraq war is still very relevant compared to other issues this country is currently facing. Not in constant reminder from the media but personally. There are families without their significant other; they are reminded daily. I'm not only because I have no relatives serving in Iraq. Some might not realize it because the cameras are not publically rolling. The soldiers are serving a major purpose and we cannot forget about them!

WE MUST NOT STOP AT THE MEDIA's presentation of what's going on. We need to get involved and stay involved until we reach a resolution.

No they have not lost

No they have not lost interest in the Iraq war for a number of reasons. The money that is going there. Not only the deaths and the maimings. No, the war is
No. 2 after the economy.

Iraq has left our headlines,

Iraq has left our headlines, but don't think for a moment that they are not still jackin' those people up. I know fo' sho' God is watching this. Those that harm the righteous beings, God's children, be prepared. We know to keep our eyes on God. He will handle those, with his own punishment. We have done just what we should have done, Speak Up Continually, and know that this war is Wrong!

Hold on to God's unchanging, unflinching hand.
Peace

Good morning Tavis. I don't

Good morning Tavis. I don't think that people have lost interest in the Iraq war, but I think that many of us sees it as somewhat of a hopeless situation that we wish we could block out of our minds. Every day we hear about more of our solders being killed, yet we keep hearing Bush and his cronies tell us that progress is being made. I think that we are so tired of the lies and the sad stories, that we somehow manage to tune it out. Not to mention the fact that we are all dealing with our own issues of rising gas prices, food prices, and just about everything else, that it is easy for us to kind of push the war in the back of our minds at least for a little while.

I agree with the last responder that we can't afford to not be interested in it because it is a huge part of why our country is in such disarray, and why I appreciate both of the Democratic candidates for their wanting to start bringing the troops home should they get in office, but I doubt that it is going to be as easy as they make it sound. This is a huge mess the this current administration has created, and one that was not created over night, therefore I doubt that we will just be able to end it overnight.

The one positive for those of us who are people of faith is the comfort in knowing that God is in control no matter what happens and that all things work together for them who love Him. I am holding on to that; I will continually be in prayer for those troops who are over there, as well as for those families who have lost loved ones already.

Iraq is not a part of the

Iraq is not a part of the conversation needed because (1) this administration & their pals don't want it to be, (2) we the people haven't forced the issue, & (3) the newspaper columnists that want to curry favor with this administration in the hopes of "being allowed to report on the news the administration decides to tell".

I do think that we the people want and need to know what's going on; however, with everything going on in our lives we just can't keep up.

Hi Tavis, It's a pleasure to

Hi Tavis,
It's a pleasure to take a few minutes of my day to respond to one of your question.

You asked if interest in the Iraq war was diminishing because of other concerns. I don't think the American people are any less interested today than any other time. I think we see the situation in Iraq as hopeless and we are helpless to do anything about it. The war is causing so many problems here in America that it's virtually inconceivable for us to lose interest in it. I think America has been put in a terrible position by the current administration and we just don't know how to diplomatically get ourselves out of it. However I think the interest is still there.

Every time I engage in a conversation about the state of the economy the war in Iraq always become a part of the conversation. America can't afford to be uninterested in the war because this war is driving every aspect of our lives.

Americans have not lost

Americans have not lost interest in the theatre war in Iraq because so many have to mourn daily the loss of their sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, moms and dads, brothers and sisters. Simply because the media mafia which bows down to what lil info which they are fed on a daily basis only chooses not to report on our soldiers in a foreign sovereign nation does not lessen the pain of loss. Let's face it, this is GW the Gangsta Wannabes' OIL WAR 3.

He needs to go fight and run back home and give us all a report on it. Yes, we will all way have other issues. Issues created for distraction and theatre and not all way True. The General who Betrayed U.S. You all call him Petraeus....I am certain that he has oft times been called out of his name. Needs to bow down and pray to One who is greater than all mankind and then he would not have to bow down to any perper-traitors pretending to be leaders. The economy=equals the quality of life for a nation. The United States Economy system has sincerely been eroded. The Presidential contest is one that will just have to accept the fact that regardless of what the media mafia puts in our ear the contest Is not over until WE THE PEOPLE SAY ITS OVER. OBAMA for President.

People are interested in the

People are interested in the war and are concerned. Many citizens, especially those persons that live in states with heavy deployment, are paying attention and looking at a timetable of when their family member can come home. We talk about the war, not in public and definitely not in places where the media can pick up our words and misconstrue them into some kind of anti-war sentiment.

We knew that signing up for the military may include fighting in a war but amidst the technology and information capabilities we have as a country, this should have been finished a long time ago. President Bush told us he was going to rid us of the WMD and now he is trying to impose the concept of democracy on a group of people who did not grow up learning about democracy and freedom like we did.

If any of the Iraqis abandon their way of thinking, they are seen as traitors and ultimately their political beliefs are tied to their salvation in the afterlife. For those people who wanted out of the country, we should have let them get out. Terrorism is planted in the mind and the heart of a person. A bomb cannot kill the human spirit. A gun cannot kill the human spirit. They believe by opposing America they are defending their sacred land against our evil and terrible oppressive way of thinking. How can you ever defeat that? Little boys being trained to kill and my adult friend has to go over there and in the midst of a sandy, desert fog try to figure if this little boy will kill him or needs his help.

This needs to end. We tried democracy and it didn't work. Didn't they learn anything from the failed colonialization efforts of the British. The British brought Christianity to Africa so instead of just spitting on you after a rival tribesman kills you, he will stop and say a prayer for you. Yeah.... that is what you call progress.

One day we are going to learn. Hopefully before America drowns into debt and fades into obscurity because it tried too hard to be the global Savior. Please call Bush and tell him someone already died on the cross, stop sending our troops to do a repeat.

After Dubya has accomplished

After Dubya has accomplished his goals of creating another Shiite state and increasing the profits of the oil companies, we should get out.
