New Year’s Resolutions

Mon, 12/31/2007 - 10:46 | Tavis Talks
A USA Today opinion piece highlights a few quirky and humorous resolutions for the New Year, including:
In '08, I resolve to... ... not mention the words 'Iran' and 'World War III' in the same sentence. — President Bush ... stop at the next rest area. — Astronaut Lisa Nowak ... buy, uh, or, uh, a world atlas. — Geography-challenged Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss South Carolina Teen ... let my old memorabilia stay in Las Vegas. — O.J. Simpson ... visit a museum of African-American history. — Nobel laureate James Watson, who questioned the intelligence of blacks.
What's your 2008 resolution?

Tavis your New Years

Tavis your New Years Resolution should be to check your ego.

I would like to live more

I would like to live more free in 2008

Ms. Deborah White, you go

Ms. Deborah White, you go girl! I am so proud of your initiative and commitment to serve your community. I encourage you to complete your degree even if it takes you longer than you planned, you will get there. Dreams deferred are not dreams lost unless abandoned, keep on moving. At 47, I’m a full time student earning my graduate degree. I tutor blind, deaf and dyslexic college students in Spanish and English part time, and I will begin teaching Spanish three days a week at the neighborhood community center to students 10 and under this Spring. I applaud your willingness to move from self to selfless; you have the attributes champions are made of, God Bless You through all your endeavors this year and beyond. Stay strong and Peace be with you.

Being an active contributor

Being an active contributor in my community is my goal for this year.

I am going to continue working on Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. My mother is a survivor of breast cancer and this is my way of giving thanks to God, by teaching others the lessons of survival.

My second goal is to do some HIV/AIDS education in my community. I publish a blog and after doing research on this subject and the impact it is having on black people, I have to speak up and help spread the word.

Continue being a social and political activist. Especially around the issues of Voters Rights and family issues.

Continue my home schooling and enroll in college again. I am going to complete my degree work, by God's grace.

I hope that this year I grow wiser and kinder in my spirit. I plan to nourish myself daily on a diet of positive mental and spiritual food.

Cathy Archey-Morgan, thank

Cathy Archey-Morgan, thank you for being a positive force in the universe and for setting the example for what that looks like. Thanks to everyone else for sharing their ideas as well.

As you are setting goals for this year, consider making them SMARTY Goals S -pecific M -easurable A -ttainable R -ealistically High T -ime Sensitive (i.e. they have a deadline) Y -ours (not someone elses).

Goals without deadlines are simply dreams.

Happy New Year!

My New Year's Resolutions

My New Year's Resolutions include bringing more joy into my life-everyday. I will make even unloading the dishwasher fun by playing my favorite music and maybe lighting a candle for ambiance. I will also take care of me as well as I take care of my loved ones, so that I can love them without feeling resentful of their needs. I will be bolder in getting what I want for my life, so that I have no regrets this time next year. This year will be my most productive year, I make that promise to myself. Sheri

Happy New Year Tavis. My

Happy New Year Tavis. My Resolution is to be better at everything I do. Better at the projects I am working on, better as a wife, better as a mother, a sister, a cousin, a co-worker, better as a neighbor, a friend, a citizen of the community. Just Better.

In 2008 my resolution is to

In 2008 my resolution is to put my dreams into action. I have been talking about writing a book for the past three years and keep putting it off, but this year I resolve to complete the book among other things that I have put off for a long time.

My New Year's Resolution is

My New Year's Resolution is to share whatever positive thought I have for and about people.

This is actually a continuation of last year and I loved it. If the young person at McD's does something well then I will acknowledge them. If I like some stranger's hair, I acknowledge them. If someone at work is always sweet and kind, I thank them and acknowledge them. Putting something positive back into the Universe.

My new resolution is to (1) write and (2) submit. I really feel God is leading me in this direction. I'm flooded with ideas in the middle of the night. Including some things with my 12 year-old son. I'm ready to move into new areas...

Happy New Year Everyone...

My N.Y.R is to stop making up

My N.Y.R is to stop making up acronyms for words I don’t feel like writing or spelling. All joking aside, my 2008 Resolution has been the same every year and that’s simply to do and be better this year, than last year.

P.S. (If it looks like I’m getting smaller & smaller, dat’s cuz I’m getting further & further away). HOLLA!

This year alone will bring

This year alone will bring about a tremendous world-breaking historical day ever. It is my belief that this world, as sad and hopeless without God as it is-it will prove to all humankind that God is in control. It saddens me to hear so many people believe in man’s power to arrogantly orchestrate his way through a world that does not belong to him. Man has nothing but a breath that is given to him by God as a gift. He intimidates no one but the weak into believing that things will never change and that he-MAN- has the power to control that thought.

If manpowers are so superior, then let us run to Dr. Man-Powers to add numbers to our days here on earth. And while we're at it -instead of having the doctor say we have medically done all that we can for your love one-there is nothing more we can do, let's ask Dr. Man-Powers to grant us a miracle.

“Gosh, what happen”? Can someone turn the lights back on please?

This entire universe is in for a rude awakening. All that we do outside of the Will of God is useless. God is making changes, his word will not return to him void. New President, new wave, New Ideas. We have never had a woman for President nor have we ever had a black man as President; this alignment is not by coincidence nor by chance; it is by divine appointment. I say all of this for one reason and one reason only, for the first time in history we will experience something we never witnessed before. No matter how many unbelievers there are concerning this Political race –we are looking at a completely new place in time never recorded by main, yet ordained before God.

1. Senator Obama reminds me somewhat of Moses. Moses told God: Exodus 4:10 (Whole Chapter)
Moses said to the LORD, "O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue."
Obama is eloquent but very slow in speech. He may stutter a little but that is okay. He will stutter us upon some insurance for our kids, education, create new jobs and some bread and Merlot wine on our tables to celebrate.

I think Obama or Hillary will allow America a better chance at being a hardworking citizen with fringe benefits. When families come home at night, they can have a whole chicken on the table instead of cutting it in half to eat some now and save some for later. They can take bubble baths and not have to use Dawn dish detergent just to get bubbles… Instead of choosing which bill to pay in order to feed their children-they will be able to be happy as a family around the table filled with abundance-I believe that for the future.

Homeless people should not exist in this rich country, yet we have Senators asking for the records of the Pastors of Mega Churchs, throwing stones at others' glass house while they sit in a shattered proof house- you think? Okay while we are at it, let us see their income. After all, our kids still have not received all that they deserve…Holla if you feel me! So while the Senator motes his brother’s eyes, give him a mirror and let him get the Nat-butter out of his.

“I’m just voicing the truth. Thank God, that he has blessed me to be a blessing for others but I can only do so much. Finally yet importantly, let us take care of our kids first before we bring company over from Mexico.

Let Us Vote For a NEW BEGINNING! LET US VOTE HISTORY TO LIFE!

I resolved years ago to never

I resolved years ago to never make another new year's resolution and that's the only resolution I've been able to keep. Instead, I'd rather contemplate what I'm expecting for the New Year.

THANK GOD FOR 2008!!! Why??? Bush can't run for president again.

I've often heard religious scholars say that seven is the number of completion and eight is the number for new beginnings. I am anticipating a new beginning with a new president. Face it; chances are this country will have either its first black president or its first female president. Now that's a new beginning. I am hopeful that we will finally see an end to this war (a.k.a the blood for oil battle). I am also hopeful that we will see a new wave of political leadership galvanized by a president who will proactively tackle the unfair racial disparities in this country's criminal and juvenile justice systems, the systematic and structural factors that continue to unfairly and unjustly oppress the already oppressed poor, and the obvious need for adequate healthcare coverage for all Americans, especially our children. As for Black America, I hope that we can collectively tackle and end the ridiculous amount of crime we perpetuate against ourselves and each other.

I realize that change is sometimes a slow process. But I am still anticipating a wave of change and new beginnings in 2008. As I listen to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, I vow that I, as a self-professed Instrument of CHANGE, will be on a mission to change the world so that one day Black America won't have to ask, in the same context as Marvin Gaye, "What's Going On"?

My new years resolution is to

My new years resolution is to stop believing that "celebrities", from all the various fields of endeavor, are somehow more significant, intelligent, blessed and most importantly deserving of our attention and patronage (adulation?) than the rest of us "commoners" in society. Sorry Tavis. I know you make your living talking to the "best and brightest". Why, you are even a member of this elite club. But I am more interested in serving the "least of these".

dmcbride, you don't have to

dmcbride, you don't have to ask for forgiveness; you have every right to feel that way besides I been tired a loooooong time ago. I have been learning from my father (old serious history teacher) about history since I was about 5.

I resolve to remain prayerful

I resolve to remain prayerful with open arms for those brothers and sisters who have left the fold, calling them back home. Those who undermine the progress, vitality, and dignity of the people, who disfranchise the people, who cast the dispersion that ignorance prevails within our communities, whether they are prominent in politics, entertainment, or live in the neighborhood. I really don’t want to mention any names… Armstrong Williams, Condoleezza Rice, Cory Booker, Jesse Peterson, Alan Keyes, Nelly, Wu-tang Clan, Karrine Steffens, and any of my “home boys”, “dogs”, or crew members down the street hell-bent on killing each other; that’s the short list.

When you do decide to come home, I’ll greet you at the front door rather than the back one, singing a rendition of Oh Happy Day! Followed by a recitation of those famous words “Free at Last, Free at Last”. I pray this year we halt the madness and exploitation of each other that destroys and debilitates us, here and in Africa.

Disclaimer: Forgive me, but I’m tired y’all.

Peace be with you

My New Year Resolution is

My New Year Resolution is going to be different than any other resolutions I have made in the past. I have come in agreement that my giving to organizations of purpose concerning our kids would be close to my heart. My New Year Resolution for 2008 is my commitment to give to several organizations on a monthly basis. It is my desire to move past (self) and what I can do for (self) into a more important dimension - being more connected to a purposeful agenda that serves to enhance the quality of learning, thinking, and potential excellence of our kids. It’s time for me to move into a greater connection of giving past my passionate words to help our kids. …. Next Year 2008 is the year to DONATE MORE PASSIONATELY!
