Gay Rights & the Black Church

Activist Donna Payne knows just how complex the issue is for the black community.A black preacher once told her she would be accepted into his church under one condition—that she didn't tell anyone she was a lesbian. Payne said keeping quiet wasn't possible."That's the conundrum in the African-American community," Payne said. "They don't want to talk about it, but they know you're there."…Yvette Alexander, who also represents a majority-black ward, gave her support and accused some ministers of doubting her faith."They have questioned my Christianity. They have questioned my morality," she said. Then, addressing the pastors, Alexander said: "Everyone is equal under God, and there are a lot in the gay community that are at your very churches, in your congregations."Although black churches tend to be socially progressive and have a history of fighting for equal rights, most are theologically conservative, believing that scripture condemns homosexuality, said Anthony B. Pinn, a professor of religious studies at Rice University.
Why are many Black churches reluctant to support or even talk about gay rights?

How to Make Black America Better

Gay Black Rights
The reason why so many black churches are reluctant to suppor or even talk about gay rights is because homosexuality is a sin according to the bible. But let's not forget that many pasters and ministers have commented sexual sins as christians. In the black church certain sexual sins are acceptable like having babies out of wedlock. Some black pasters believe that having babies out of wedlock is ok because Mary was pregnant with Jesus without marrying Joseph. But having sex and getting females pregnant is a sin. Having sex before marriage is a sin. Having sex every Friday and Saturday with your wife and doing any sexual activity to satisfiy your flesh is sexual sin. But the black church is not speaking out about it. 75% of black heterosexuals have HIV and AIDS but the black church is not speaking out against this because it is heterosexuality.
I don't know why the black church is against black gays and lesbians getting their civil rights. There are not many blacks who have homosexual sex. HIV and AIDs among black gays and lesbians is low compared to heterosexals. So I don't understand what the problem is and why black men are so afraid to come out and wear booty shorts, flip flops, and tight butt jeans. Many black men who wear baggy shorts, shoes, and baggy jeans have HIV and AIDs. The real sinners are the heterosexuals not the homosexuals.
Gay Black Rights
I'm very up set that the black community is against gay and lesbian rights. 75% of all African American women have HIV and the black church and the black community is ok with that. 10% of gays and lesbians have HIV according to the U.S. news report 2000. The real sinners are those devilish heterosexuals. Gay black men and women need to become violent and carry guns like the Black Panthers did back in the 1960's. What the black and white gay and lesbian community need are violent fighters like Malcolm X and the black panthers who will fight against the heterosexuals. In the summer time, gay black men and women should wear booty shorts and flip flops and carry riffles. In the winter time, they should wear tight butt jeans and carry guns like the black panthers. Now I know that the homosexuals can't win gay civil rights through violence but gays and lesbians will get Americans attention through violence. It's time for the all gays and lesbians to come out of the closet and fight!!! Wear your booty shorts and flip flops gay black men and women and fight!!!!. Wear your tight butt blue jeans gay black men and women and fight!!!! It's time for the gays to fight for Civil Rights. After we fight then we can get our rights and start our own black homosexual churches and wear our booty shorts, flip flops, and tight blue jeans forever. YaYoo! and Amen!
Why are many Black churches reluctant to support or even talk ab
The primary reason the church overall is reluctant to support or even talk about gay rights, is simply because it is against the word and the will of God. The church is the body of Jesus Christ and is empowered by God to do His will and to obey His laws. When mankind sins against God, the Lord has designed a loving way for man to return to Him through repentance. If you commit fornication, or murder, or lie, the Lord allows all of us to come to him free speaking and give him our sins. No one is perfect and everyone has sinned. The difference is that some people try to justify their actions such as "Cain" and others recognize their wrongdoing and seek to make it right before God like "Abel". Romans 1:24-27 says, "Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet."
The church cannot not move against the Word or will of God, and God will not change His word to appease the sinful lust of man. We all have a right to choose which direction we desire for our lives. We can trust God's word or move against His Word. Nonetheless, the Word is true and will abide forever. So to try and force the church to line up with the world's desire to call "evil"- good, and "good" - evil will never happen and the truth will always hold strong.
Black Churches and Gays
Maybe a lot of people in the black churches need to learn to read the bible. Leviticus, the book that is often quoted says that a disabled person can't be in the ministry, it also says that men should not shave the hair on their faces, and it says that women should not wear clothes made of two fibers. If that were adhered to some of the black churches would have to shut down.
Thanks For the Truth
I understand the bible words are piercing the sinful nature of man. When I'm doing wrong personally, I seek the approval of man to justify my wrongs when I know what's right. Many can just oppose the word of God to satisfy their cravings for sin. WE can use the number one scripture many of us hide behind “Judge yet not, so that you will not be judge." This is the blanket of safety for many who refuse to own up to their errors of sin.
God loves us all but does not and by his word will not accept our sins. He died a painful death for our sins and yet we won't even respect that much of his sufferings, but will continue to bathe in sins, twist the word, and lash out at the Black Churches. The Black Church’s standing on the word and in return the ball of the lust to embrace evil sin keeps rolling into an avalanche by those who seek not to repentance. Why should your faith of God's word intermingle with the world sins that pressure you to convert to their way of living against the word of God? I have three gay close friends who understand how much I love them and respect them. But they also know my standpoint and they understand mine. I will not condemn them nor have they condemned me. We all have and still sin. We just respect each others journey with love.
The world will forever call good evil and evil good, the bible points that out clearly. But what we must do as people of Faith is hold on to the truth no matter how much it's hurts!
Why seriously would the Church go against the word of God for the world? The only thing the Black Church’s should be doing is loving all mankind not converting to their ways.
Black folk are unfortunately
Black folk are unfortunately ignorant to themselves. We aren't all into Church. God is not defined by some words on a page. It is action. LOVE YOUR SONS & DAUGHTERS AND ACCEPT THEM AS GOD CREATED THEM. But, I believe you won't anyway since ignorance has gripped your brain like a conspiracy theory.
Black folk are unfortunately
Throughout history Black people and the Black church have often times ignored and dodged an issue simply because it is unpleasant, but I do not believe it can be called ignorance. True, the Bible tells us to love one another, but does not command us to love the actions of another whether it be a family member or not. It is the practicing of sin which the Bible makes clear is wrong. You probably will not look it up (as described above) but Galatians 5:19-21 sums it up nicely. In the list behaviors, homosexuality being among them along with fornication, etc., etc. are listed and the key point at the end of the 21st verse is this: "...those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."
A doctor practices medicine.
A lawyer practices law. And sin is practiced.
Yes, love the individual, not the sin.
If they (gay) have to ask
If they (gay) have to ask to be recognized and accepted for who they are then they must obviously know that what they are doing is not right, I would ask that they (gay's) not seek approval from man, God is the creater and anything after that is between them and God, anyone else knows you are suppose to go to church and repent and ask God for forgiveness, what's the problem with same sex folks having to get approval first??????????/
The reason Gays seek approval from Man
Gays seek approval from man because gays do not look upon God they look upon man. They really believe there is no God its just man who believes in God and its the "opinion" of those believers who are holding them back from normality.
So the gays seek after their approval. There are some gays who even get ordained and certificates saying they are ministers then use that as game.
To justify their behavior
First off I like to start by
First off I like to start by saying everyone has a right to choose which path one wants to journey in his/her lifetime. My question to your question Tavis, is why should someone else beliefs be shoved down your throat? Why should I support and believe something against my faith? Now loving and believing is two different energies. I can love you and still not believe in what you believe in/ I’m really sick and tired of gay support being shoved down the black churches throat. Talk about gay rights, it would be more appropriate to say talk about human rights.
No one will make me believe against my faith and I hope all who feel the same way I do continue to stand. I will not support what I don’t believe in. This is what keeps America at odds when people try and shove things down your throat that you don’t care to embrace. Let’s talk about human rights; maybe you will get a better response.
Gay Rights and the Black Church
Love the sinner hate the sin. I can believe that, I can receive that. Just as the bible says that the Word of God will never fade away, we must not alter our faith and Christian beliefs to accomodate today's public mindset. The bible emphatically states God position on homosexuality. It is an unacceptable practice. The black church or any bible-believing church should reject it, yet reach out to those who are involved in it. The bible never directed us to believe something unless and until the majority of the world says differently.
