Jobs, Anyone?

Tue, 11/03/2009 - 12:04 | EconomyPolitics

In an article on Salon.com, former labor secretary Robert Reich addresses the issue of unemployment, in the wake of signs that the economy is recovering:

The economy may be in a technical recovery, but this is not a real recovery, and the "green shoots" or "positive signs" that Wall Street cheerleaders love to shout about are phantoms of their ever-optimistic imaginations. The stimulus is working but it is far from adequate. Before the stimulus, we were losing more than 500,000 jobs a month. Now that 40 percent of the stimulus has been spent, we are losing more than 250,000 jobs a month.
He goes on to make some recommendations.

What do you think should be done about unemployment?

Food and the Economy

Today I listened to your show as I do every Sunday morning that I am able. In hearing the several conversations about the hunger report on the 49 million Americans afflicted, I waited in vain for you or your diverse speakers to do the fundamental thing I insist among my students: CONNECT THE DOTS!
Hunger, jobs, the economy of chaos in America cannot be disconnected from military spending, to wit, on October 28, 2009, President Obama signed into law a $680 BILLION 2010 budget, the largest ever, to make war on and to kill people. I heard nary a whimper from you or the media in general.
Rev Martin Luther King Jr. over forty years ago prophesied: "A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense that on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death." INDEED!

Job, The Hungry, Poverty in America, Stop the War

Jobs are major concern. The poverty level in America is off the charts, making new records in aeery area also. This needs aggressive resolution. People, men women and children are dying from lving on the streets, and living on the streets. eating out of trash cans and off the ground. This is insane and carzy not to see this is a major problem and issue.

We produce and have enough to feed the entire world, but we do not feed the world. We go to war and the people are still starving and suffering, from not having enough food to eat, or proper medical care, if any, in the wealthiest country on this planet. Corporations and still making major record profits in this recession, which is outrageous. When wil it all end?

The USA should have never been a willing participant in this war. Killing civilians over there, their women and children is a major catastrophe. We are killing them, not many of their soldiers for the most part. It is an extremely sad a circumstance, which is the tapestry of our lives.

We are all one, no matter how you slice the pie. We all come from the same place in Africa in the Garden of Eden, where life began with Adam and Eve; we are ALL inter-woven in life and blood. We are all inter-connected by our family blood lines throughout all of our civilizations and all of our history. War only kills, mames, hurts and destroys life, our life, our families, our children, our loved ones.

We must capture and prosecute all of the perpetrators, which many of them are already on this American soil, living in the USA, enjoying freedom which USA promotes, and their countries does not. They are right here in our backyards in the USA supporting their hatred. They place value on life. They are head strong and bent on ultimately destroying life, their life and our life. When will this end?

This madness will not. It will go on for generations to come. If we would obey our own laws and laws of other courtries, which they have in tact for criminals, and enforce the laws already on the books, they may not have come to pass. Total destruction is the end result of war, any war. There is no difference from our American gangs and gangs from other cultures, isn’t it? The end result is destruction of people, and a race. It is a lot to soak in at the end of the day. We all have a voice and a part to play. Do not be silent, speak out, use your voices!! This is not our purpose in life to destroy life, but to love and help one another.
