According to
CNN, a report published by the Black AIDS Institute, an HIV/AIDS think tank, states that the AIDS epidemic among African Americans in some parts of the U.S. is as severe as in parts of Africa:
"More Black Americans are infected with HIV than the total populations of people living with HIV in seven of the 15 countries served by PEPFAR," noted Phill Wilson, CEO of the Black AIDS Institute and one of the authors of the report.
An article on the
Institute's site states the United States leads the global response to HIV/AIDS, but fails to mobilize the same commitment to address the large and growing epidemic within its own borders.
What responsibility does the Black community bear in stemming this unfortunate tide?

Dear Tavis: As I think about
Dear Tavis:
As I think about the origins or cause of HIV/AIDS, I am confused because there seems to be various ways that someone can contract the virus. There has to be some common denominator as to why blacks or more susceptible to this virus than other populations.
There is a common myth that blacks are more promiscuous. I don't believe that to be true. We do care about our bodies but oftentimes do not get healthcare or cannot afford health care. Many times we can afford healthcare and pay healthy premiums but are give sub-standard care by medical professionals.
Historically we have cause to distrust the medical profession. Nevertheless, we need to know that if we are drug users and exchange dirty needles with someone else's blood it can cause HIV/AIDS. Can a man not using drugs and not sleeping with another man give the virus to a woman? If so, then what is it about the makeup of African Americans or people of color that would make us more vulnerable to this virus.
What has changed in the past 20-30 years in terms of food, medicines and spirits that has caused African Americans and people of color to succumb to this dangerous virus? Is this virus in all of us and just remaining dormant until we commit some deviant sexual act or use a dirty needle to inject drugs into our veins? I am really frustrated and confused about this. However, now that African Americans and people of color are majority recipients of this dreaded disease, drug companies and the general population are not concerned about whether we get a handle on this or not. We will help to fund major drug companies. So don't be so quick to find a cure or stamp out this disease.
Whoever, is out there and reads this comment maybe you can help enlighten me on this issue.
Thank You
Are the CDC (Center for
Are the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention- www.cdc.gov) statistical numbers SKEWED? Since many African-Americans and minorities go to public clinics and some are on public assistance with their information given to those government agencies who have been tested versus Whites who have private insurance and have private doctors, with those private practices not being allowed to disclose medical histories of their patients tests results - is it fair and accurate data from the CDC? In no way am I attempting to make small of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in our community, I just know that everything that is written isn't true and we all deserve to know the TRUTH concerning this pressing matter. Thank you.
Expel the immoral Brother:
Expel the immoral Brother: The born again brother
The truth, and maybe no one wants’ to hear it, but here it is:
Expel the Immoral Brother: 1 Corinthians 5: 9-11 (911 emergency msg)
Dear brothers and sisters, I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people-not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral or greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother (Christian) but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater, or slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. WITH SUCH A MAN DO NOT EVEN EAT.
Wow what harsh words, sounds judgmental to me. Well not so, at least from a Christian standpoint. These warnings were given to the Christian faith, not to sound harsh, but these were guidelines for Christians to follow for their own good. These are the moral standards that have long been forgotten. This is why we are so confused and lost in a world of sin. Once we become Christians, we profess that we believe Jesus died for our sins, and in three days he rose again, with all powers in his hands. We believe that all things were conquer through Jesus Christ. If we believe that, then why are Christians so lost, when it comes to everyday issues? My guess would be that we not only know the right thing to do but we wrestle with flesh, which seems to win the battle- majority of the time. We refuse to kill the flesh and we let it win over us in those areas. We can’t win only though, if we refuse to ask for God’s help, we end up on the same battlefield, while history repeats itself.
Now we can walk in the excuse lane for miles to come, but when will we stop for help along the highway of trouble? Man/woman has many weakness, we all fall short of the Glory. But when do we stop repeating our offenses and using the excuses to pamper our wrongs. “Judge not, so that you won’t be judge”, is the favorite scripture we use- when we want to dance along the line of sin. Accountability, does that sound familiar Tavis? It not only applies to Political figures, it applies to everyday people, and especially the people of God.
Oh and to add to my comment,
Oh and to add to my comment, I can only speak from a female standpoint and I'm not speaking for all female's just my perspective. Parts of my comment ealier stated:I read this article and the most I can say: is lord help us all. NOT JUST FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITIES BUT THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! We have a serious epidemic that continues to grow out of control. When the bible say’s “men will be lover of themselves” I guess I really didn’t crunch that thought too much, but I do now… It’s better for a single woman to stay single,(MY PERSPECTIVE) if she doesn’t want to play a game of Russian roulette with her life.
I guess becoming a Nun gets more impressive by the minute.
Once again my standpoint on men having sex with men:I don’t know if a message is in this HIV epidemic but it sure as hell looks like it may be. I guess many of us can relate back to the word which say’s “The wages of sin is death” cant get no clearer than that… I don’t want to be judgmental about this epidemic but something is terrible wrong with this picture. You know why I’m so concern about this issue, take a look at the future and the rate that this epidemic is flowing, Will there be any potential safe heterosexual male’s left in the safety zone?
My major concerns is narrowed down to what will effect me and my family. This disease will continue to get out of control because truth is not within it.

Ms. Lady: The word of God
Ms. Lady:
The word of God does two things: It either comfort or convict. Everyone wants’ the comfort zone and not truth. Well take whatever roads suites you! Anytime truth is spoken people immediately take the offense mode, which tells a lot about where people really stand on certain issues. My comment never singled out this disease to homosexuality. My comment as I stated earlier if anyone who commented had taken the time to read the New Study on HIV. Over half of the new cases that are being reported can be related back to men having sex with men. My point was simple: We have a problem and my main concern is this, if over half of the new cases are related to men having sex with men, then women are up against a time bomb. So let me put it this way, when someone stated value your body, what about the married women (and I’m only speaking from a female standpoint) what about the wife that has a husband who desires to have an affair with a man, which in return she gets the HIV virus which leads to Aids. While we all should educate ourselves about the HIV virus, what about the innocent people who live according to the rules but have these men playing games with their lives? What about that? Make all the excuses available but this is why we are face with so many plagues in our communities.
Some of our black people seldom take truth at face value. We much rather find a back door, an excuse whatever comforts us in our wrong. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see what’s happening but far too many of us are afraid to speak the truth. If truth is spoken it either gets twisted or you become judgmental. When I begin to embrace hate-only then will I have a problem with myself and God. But truth never creates a large audience, it does the opposite. So while many of us avoid what’s right, there we will find the dead end. As I said earlier, and maybe loathe was harsh, but I dislike very much a bisexual man. A gay man I can respect but a bisexual man’s ways, I don’t care for at all.
Now before you respond, read the link that follows my comment. Just like Mr. Cosby and Senator Obama, I too will continue to speak the truth and like Esther said in the bible: “If I perish let me perish”. If after I post the word of God and someone still say’s I’m judging, what you are really saying is that God is judging…
I agree it is not appropriate
I agree it is not appropriate to place blame on a specific group or class of people. AIDS/HIV is an epidemic that has no prejudice or preferences. Instead of wasting energy on speaking the disapprovals of people with certain orientations, we should try to educate one another to stop the wide spread. (Post education links, prevention articles, or even words of wisdom.)
For the person who inserted the scripture, you should read:
Therefore you are without excuse, every man of you who passes judgment, for in that you judge one another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. (Romans 2:1-2)
I would have to agree with
I would have to agree with Lytening25 who states that people should value their bodies and be more informed on the seriousness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. To label HIV as a homosexual disease is a stereotypic persona which is a contributor to the ignorance plagued in the African American community that only "gay people get HIV."
African Americans need to be educated, resources need to be made available in low socioeconomic status communities. Families need to be educated on the seriousness of the spread of the disease so they may in turn educate their children.
HIV/AIDS is not solely a homosexual disease; it effects all races, genders, sexualities, and has no discrimination.
Right on lytening25!
Add On: Over half of the new
Add On: Over half of the new HIV cases are RELATED TO men having sex with men...No blame here, just facts...
Excuse me for my
Excuse me for my inappropriate words-let me be spiritually correct.
Matthew 19:4-5
4"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,'[a] 5and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'[b]?
1 Corinthians 6:9-10... 9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Romans 1:24-28 says:
24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.
2 Peter 2:6-10
6if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men 8(for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— 9if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.[a] 10This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature[b] and despise authority
I think it is inappropriate
I think it is inappropriate to blame any specific group or people's sexuality. We just need to respect our bodies and value our lives. It's unfortunate but people still think that this will not happen to them and that AIDS is no longer a death sentence. We have to educate people and break this mentality and cycle. Educate children about this disease. And this should not be a taboo subject in black homes; black women and men need to value their lives. A moment of gratification should not put an end to your life.
Tavis this link below is just
Tavis this link below is just a back drop of the article on your page. I'm absolutely amazed at how this HIV thing has gotten out of control. People love sex more than they love life. The new HIV cases are over half of men having sex with men...
I read this article and the most I can say: is lord help us all. Not just the black communities but the entire United States of America! One thing that I will ask of God is this: Lord when I do consider, I mean seriously consider dating again let your blood that is pure surround his soul.
I don’t know if a message is in this HIV epidemic but it sure as hell looks like it may be. I guess many of us can relate back to the word which say’s “The wages of sin is death” cant get no clearer than that… I don't want to be judgmental about this epidemic but something is terrible wrong with this picture. This is why homosexuality is wrong, blast my opinion to mars if you like- but we have a serious problem and the problem is staring us right in the face. I know most will find my comment uncomfortable but I will speak the truth and let the comments fall where they wish. I have several homosexual friends and I love them dearly but one thing is for sure is this: I will never condone their ways. It’s not what I believe in and they respect my standpoint.
I respect a gay man’s sexuality but one thing I loathe the most is a bisexual man. This is the most deceitful, dangerous man on earth, he is no better than a killer. He plays a man by day and a homosexual by night.
With a gay man- at least he is honest enough to let you know his direction, but not the bisexual predator. He glides swiftly through the market with his mask on portraying both sides of the fence, only to pamper his lust for variety from the pick of the litter. If there were any laws that should be past, being bisexual should be one of them! With a MAXIMUM jail sentence of life without parole!
