Drug Testing for Teachers?

Sun, 02/15/2009 - 21:47 | Education

A USA Today article describes an attempt in a North Carolina city to establish random drug testing of teachers and other employees:

In North Carolina, a lawsuit by the state teachers' association prevented a 2007 start for random drug testing in Graham County schools.

Former county school board chairman Mitch Colvard says he saw a worsening local drug problem in his job as a paramedic. He pushed for the policy in 2006.

"I think when I put my kids in their hands, they lose their rights," Colvard says. "My rights are more important."

Robbinsville teacher Cheryl Morgan says testing would pull her from the classroom when she's under pressure to boost test scores.

Teacher Crystal White says no one under the influence should have charge of children.

Should teachers be required to submit to random tests for drugs and alcohol?

Drug Testing for Teachers

If we test teachers, we need to test police officers.

Drug Testing Teachers

Drug testing Teachers is a wonderful idea. Many years ago I ran into a few that used drugs...

Drug Testing Teachers

I am all for random drug testing for teachers. Speaking as both a parent and a teacher, I feel that if we are given the task to work with children that we have to be accountable for all of our actions both in and outside of our classrooms. I don't want anybody going into the classroom high on drugs attempting to teach my kids or anybody else's for that matter. Education is too important and teachers need to be in the right frame of mind in order to do the jobs that we are hired to do. So, yes I would definiely agree to random drug testing for teachers.
