How High is Too High?

At what price point will gas prices be too high and result in your making major changes in your lifestyle?

It is too high right now. I

It is too high right now. I am truly conservative in my spending, and in gas purchase. I am getting $15 at a time opposed to filling up for $55/week. We are using all can goods in the cabinets and all meat that is in the freezer ( I hear ya, someone just said "MEAT"). We are not eating out at all. I haven't cut back on the cat's and dog's food. I really have no choice there, they know we love our animals, and the prices reflect that. I cook chicken thighs for your highness (that's not her name, that's her status), and give her dog food as well. I take the train and the bus when I can, and I like it. I have cut back on paper towels and napkins. Like in the day I use dish towels. We throw nothing away. We are not ashamed to eat leftovers (if there are any).

This is like we are walking in a drunken' haze, or like Rosemary's Baby..."Is this really happening to me?"

We are really in a time that is reflective of the demise of the French Monarchy. They are forcing us to "Eat Cake" with a smirk on their faces. We know what happened to Marie Antoinette and to Louis XVI.

Major Changes? $10 a gallon.

Major Changes? $10 a gallon. Otherwise it's just gas.

Gas prices are already too

Gas prices are already too high. We are at the point where we are already making major changes to our lifestyles. I am fortunate enough to teach at a school that is literally 1.5 miles away from my home, and go to a church that is only 7 minutes away from my home, and everything else that I need to do, I try to make sure that I stay within a 10 mile radius of home for the most part. We are having to decide how many groceries to buy based on how much gas we need. To make matters worse in my case, two weeks ago my husband lost his job. He suffered a stroke almost a year ago on July 9th, and was off work for about a month after being in the hospital for a week. Upon returning to work he had to take off a couple of times per month to go back to the doctor for follow up visits, and he always provided doctors statements. Well two weeks ago he was fired because of his attendance over the past year. With that news he now has no more insurance and he needs medication. I can add him to my insurance, but that is going to cost us about $400 per month, and with the cost of gas and food as well as other living expenses, it is going to be a real struggle to balance everything financially.

To make matters worse we are also dealing with this massive flooding situation here in Missouri, which is ultimately going to cause food and gas prices to go even higher. I have gone so far as to see if we could qualify for food stamps since my husband is no longer employed, but for a family of six, my income is still too much for us to qualify. This goes to show that as prices continue to rise, income levels seem to be at a standstill. Our wages are definitely not increasing with the cost of living and this is certainly causing us to stay home more, eat out less and cut back on things that we take for granted such as cable, going to the dry cleaners, the movies, etc.

The hardest part about all of this is making the kids understand. We have three children ages 7, 8, & 9, plus a teenage cousin who is in our care, and we have had to cut back on some of their activities as well. For example, I would like for the boys to have played baseball this summer and for my daughter to have participated in track or cheerleading, but that would have cost us about $150 per child plus the cost of uniforms. There is no way that we can afford that. They also want to play basketball, but again that is $120 per child. I truly believe that it is important for kids to be involved in these type of activities, but unfortunately with the cost of everyday living expenses, we just don't have the extra money in our budgets for these activities and there are not any free programs around in the community or in the schools. Kids can't understand that and they should not have to.

Breaking News: We interrupt

Breaking News: We interrupt this program to bring to you this special report, gas prices are too high, people are suctioning gas out of parked cars, stealing from the pumps, drive offs, drive through - need we say more?

Americans are dealing with major changes in their lifestyles - yes indeed. Example: Barrett Parkway where I live is filled with white people shopping/dining out every weekend, not so lately - it’s like a ghost town. Anytime I can drive straight through Barrett Parkway in seven minutes, something is wrong. So when I don’t see the white people out shopping and dining, we have some serious/major problems at hand. Now lately when I go to the pumps to fill my tank up, let’s just say it cost me fifty to fill up; I only get 10.2 gallons which restricts me from a lot of long distance riding, shopping, visiting, etc.

Gas prices have caused me to reduce some of my spending habits-sounds beneficial-heck no! I hate restrictions/cutbacks- it simply interferes with my personal desires/plans. But hey, adjusting, cutbacks, cut-off, improvising, it's not so bad, just a little annoying. Case in point: I love me some O’Charleys – one of my favorite dining areas to eat out-gas prices are cutting right into my friendship with O’Charley’s-not good at all. I may see my O’Charleys twice a month now-if that! Another example: If I must pick and choose whether to look at my Pastor on television rather than drive three highways to get to the physical church, that’s a problem. I drive 75 south, 258 west, 20 west, three highways just so I can get my spiritual food. You may be asking if I can find a closer church, HECK NO – don’t ask! Definitely not, not a good alternative for me, so I watch by tube.

I’m not comfortable with the reduction/cutbacks but hey, this is the corner the gas price has me hemmed up in. When you add all of your cost of livings up, rent, utilities, phone, groceries, personal items, insurance, gas, cable, heck-monies are tighter than JJ Evans and the Village people pants put together. But I say to myself often…This too shall pass!
