Worse Off than Our Parents?

Thu, 11/15/2007 - 23:25 | CommunityWealth
A recent Pew Research Center Economic Mobility of Black and White Families survey indicates that Blacks today are less upbeat about their economic prospects than previous generations.
The survey also finds blacks less upbeat about the state of black progress now than at any time since 1983. Looking backward, just one-in-five blacks say things are better for blacks now than they were five years ago. Looking ahead, fewer than half of all blacks (44%) say they think life for blacks will get better in the future, down from the 57% who said so in a 1986 survey.
Why is this downward mobility a reality in Black America?

1. Opportunities and options

1. Opportunities and options for both degree and non-degree jobs which pay an amount near the standard for living are far less.
2. The credit crisis is and will continue to have a disproportionate impact on our access to capital.
3. As entire industries have been totally destroyed with no replacements in site opportunities for business and enterprise have declined drastically.
4. Because of these and many other economic factors we do not qualify for the few opportunities that become available.
5. We have not experienced this type of economic despair in our life time. Many of us are simply in denial about the seriousness of this crisis....
6. Unless we change our way of thinking and actions we will not be able to meet the challenges of this environment.
7. We must identify new income opportunities and systems to communicate them to the mass.

America first (unlike before

America first (unlike before when it became about re-adopting small parts of our much diversified African roots) to inspire drive within our culture. I am not that smart (although I do believe our Black Intelligentsia have gotten too smart for themselves and us) and virtually no one is “pure black”

Mr. Smith your statement is of truth to the core of our beings. Your words came alive to me and I hope whomever read your posting that they will get the same effect that I did. Although you are long winded-my God can we scream five page essay- lol. It was worth the space on this blog… We need more men like you…

You talk about kids not thinking that being smart is cool-Although we may think that Johnny (white kid) is smarter than our kids (lord knows that’s a myth) we are definitely not seeing the real picture. Have you ever wondered why there is such a fuss over school districts and the penalty that they impose on Parents for wanting to send their children to a school of their choice? It makes me wonder about the School Superintendent and the entire system. You can actually go to jail if you are caught violating the school's dumb rule. Isn’t that extremist when it comes to learning here in America? To me, that is a concrete sign of fear to keep our kids from learning.

I see how the whole system is set up to discourage our kids from excelling. From the womb to the grave America’s system is set up for a black man to be incarcerated at a higher rate than whites-studies shows that. And what’s so irritating about that study is simply the unequal fraction of both black/white males committing that same crime but blacks are triple times more likely to get a harsher sentence than Johnny or Bill. So when our boys – young or old grow - up in a society where his best chance of success is squandered by a biased mind-then what hope are they really looking at? Many black boy’s/men future has been destroyed by a bias pen. So how do you incorporate the minds of our black boys/men? How do you get them to release the slavery name and create a new one?

I know that it’s cool to be smart but what about the black man that’s up against a time bomb of racism? How do you get him to uncalculate his steps of fear of this world? What are his odds here in America? Can you really say that it’s good to be here in America with a system that’s corrupted and biased from the day of a Black Man's birth?

Can we detract his fears of failure against the corrupt system? We have so many people that are working to change laws so that America can be the Nation that God has created her to be. But the field of opportunity is definitely not level or fair, so my question and concerns are always geared toward the Black Man-because within that man stands the Black Family Heritage and without him there is no family. It’s no Fantasy walk for a black man but my heart and support will always have his back-even when he seems to be a little disoriented and swayed by the evilness of life-he still holds that hidden treasure that scares the world into a panic. I pray for them always and until the sun is evenly set on them I will forever pray their justice here in America…

As I am reading this and

As I am reading this and looking at my own life, being one of those has spiraled to near poverty despite any advantage I may have had, I think of some of the mistakes I have made in my journey thus far. In my particular case it was very much being paralyzed by my father's demands of perfection.

On a much larger scale, it is also in part to the intra-cultural divisions among us. Rebeca is right in many ways. We as a people MUST take back the imagery of our culture and fully embrace the idea that it is not just only "one way" to live as an Black person in America. We have almost completely lost a whole generation of Black MEN just to the lack of control of our culture. We've been "pimped out". We had a TV station that could have changed the perception about who we are and the diversity of our existence instead it slowly promoted, with snowball like effect, the negative underbelly of "the ghetto". It is a bit ironic that Chris Rock can say in his movie "Head of State" that you can stop crime today if you put the laws on a Nelly video. Now the thought is "if ya ain't a thug, you ain't s@%&!" We must first reach them on their level of language and understanding and pull them slowly up out of their blindness. A blind man does not know it's dark!

We MUST ESTABLISH FINANCIAL EDUCATION AS A STANDARD PRACTICE IN OUR COMMUNITY! PERIOD! Without it we will never build wealth in our community. Money is a tool. It is ammo for the gun to which we fire at what we wish to hunt down. And it seems that most of us have hunted down big game status symbols instead of problems that endanger our survival on a personal, family, neighborhood, cultural level. Are you hunting a new level for the next generation or are you hunting the newest Benz or Caddy? Are you leaving your kids a will or a won't?

We must make life outside of sports and entertainment more glamorous. We must instill a new respect and honor for achievement for professions and entrepreneurship. We need to instill more honor for Mr. Mayweather who owns the rib shack a little more than Mr. Mayweather who breaks ribs for a living. You may have or have not agreed with Powell or Rice, but why have we not celebrated the fact that the first two Black Secretaries of State have come back to back? Or that Rice was the first Black or Woman to be the National Security Advisor of any cabinet? (And no, I am not a republican or democrat. I am fiercely independent and feel that when we become more independent then maybe someone will care beyond election day) Who should we hold with more esteem: the spoiled guy that can make a jumper, the artist whose jewelery is worth more that the combined income than one floor of the the projects they came from (especially creating inspiration to go out and destroy lives for it), or the third most powerful person on the planet (which, without most of us understanding is making it possible to make a Black man the most powerful man on the planet)? Are the image of "blackness" that skewed?

School MUST become cool. It has been a long standing undertone that education = whiteness. WE MUST DESTROY THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL. We invented education for goodness sakes! The oldest university ever to have existed was in Timbuktu! I don't know if we replace it with teachings about the "Black Tax", or a new cultural revolution that puts Families and our life here in America first (unlike before when it became about readopting small parts of our very diversified African roots) to inspire drive within our culture. I am not that smart (although I do believe our Black Intelligentsia have gotten too smart for themselves and us) and virtually no one is "pure black" (see Rebecca's post above).

We need to get real with this. We need to get "grimey" with this. Bill Cosby's commentary was a slap in the face to some people. But Daddy's gotta spank ya sometimes when ya get out of line! High horses need to be dismounted and ears must come to the ground to hear the whispers of those who have given up on power all together. The Church needs to re inject morality, not "praisology" back into our culture. The leaders need to lead people to self empowerment stop leading them in slogan poetry. The intelligentsia need to see from the ground up and not ivy tower down. The politicians need to ride the elephant and lead the donkey instead of being trampled by the circus animal and having their face stuck up the ass.

As a Minister in training by the calling of Jesus Christ, He has made it aware that time is short. Let us not be found sleeping on the watch.

Excuse me for being long winded; I am a "young" Preacher after all.

whatever you receive you have

whatever you receive you have to ask for by those that don't always see you as equal. They view anything related to light as evil, I've always been taught that jesus christ is the lightbearer as well as God the Father of Christ as light, yet much to my surprise according to the wikipedia encyclopedia lightbearer has been given to satan, according to roman catholic teachings (Catholisim), as long as we differ along spiritual line there will always be division, as factual now were already enduring what others believe the will of God is for mankind and there still waiting on Christ jesus, as if he never came. There is only one Faith and we do have to fight for it as we did when it was considered a death sentence to be caught alive reading the bible as well as desiring to have a personal relationship with your creator. I'm still trying to understand how it will be explained that humans ever became equal to animals in the sight of JAH. I'm sure it just another way to mismanagement of millions of dollars to save animal lives, instead of human lives. Yes were still living in the past, that's yet to catch up and the only thing that's changed is the talk. Thank God that vengeance belongs to him because the control is limited to time and to much is given much is expected.

I will beat this drum a lot I

I will beat this drum a lot I think---sorry.

Part of the problem is that the media and those african americans frequently interviewed in the media have DEFINED "blackness" as a lack of education, a lack of success, an impoverished background, a hip hop mentality and ebonics. With the exception of some of the TV shows and movies---there is no serious consideration to what it is to be black in america OUTSIDE of the ghetto.

In a sense, our children are THINKING that they are left with the choice of being successful OR being black! We are allowing our race to for the most part be defined by the "least of these" as it were. We are doing the racist white man's work for him!

This seems likely to be related to the fact that it is the more colorful differences between our communities and the white communities that are of interest to the media viewing public. But the news media should not be allowed or encouraged to continue to discuss all of our populations as though there were NO rural blacks with Walton lifestyles or NO suburban blacks. The issues and demographics of these populations are allowed to become invisible to our children.

As long as the children equate being middle class with being white----what do you think the resultant economics will look like? Upper middle class suburban black children when looking for a racial identification often look at the rap artists or the tragic lifestyle (and thus most visible) athletes and artists.

I think that if those african americans with the ability to impact the media image of african americans ceased to participate in the white man's "he had an interesting upbringing" game, it might help. Make them start separating issues of poverty from issues of race. When they quote their crime stats---ask them to break them down to urban vs suburban vs rural. Ask them how drug use among suburban upper middle class black children plays out against their white counterparts! Stop letting them tell our kids that if you are successful you MUST continue to prove you are "black enough" to run for president!

Tell them that there are black families that have several generations of educated successful people. Educate the media.

Whites refuse to be defined forever by their hillbilly, trailer park living ancestors. They don't feel insulted at the notion of being defined by their 1% uppercrust. We should stop being ashamed to be defined by the successful in our communities!

On sites with white posters I find myself having to over and over and over again point out that blacks have ALWAYS enjoyed some measures of success in the USA. That there were Black lawyers and doctors in the USA DURING slavery! That there were black ambassadors that preceded Andrew Young. (One of whom was my great great grandfather John Thompson.) That there were black colleges and boarding schools and banks and businesses and that those institutions were patronized by blacks who could afford them. That there were black hotels and vacation homes and national organizations (long preceding the NAACP).

In short, if this history and these communities stay invisible---what do you think the choices that our children KNOW they have will be?

NOT ONE african american pundit on any show I saw responded to any mass media source by saying that OBAMA was black enough for the black community because we don't define ourselves using the same yardstick that whites do. We are used to interracial people---always have been----thus it does not count in our world. We are used to lawyers and other educated men and women ---always have been--- thus that was their concern. We are used to articulate speakers ---always have been --- thus they were impressed, not us. I kept waiting for someone to remark that EVERY candidate should be concerned about if they were "black enough" or not if they wanted the african american vote!

It didn't happen. The responses of those african americans who made the airwaves validated the question for white america---and for the children who have to answer the question for themselves about themselves.

I think people should be

I think people should be careful with surveys. It can be manipulated. Not all Mexicans are standing up for each other. For that matter not all races stand up for each other. Caucasians don't. They put down lower-income and less educated whites. The reports that are put out in mainstream media working. We are starting to believe how people define us..Watch out for people or organizations that benefit off of surveys reading a certain way.

They are called Mexicans. We

They are called Mexicans. We black people don't stand for each other like other races. This is going to be our downfall.

I was very distressed after

I was very distressed after your commentary on Thursday. So, I went to the Pew website and read the entire report for myself. I noticed that less than 2,400 people were used for the survey. That made me feel a little better. But, since I am in the generation referenced in the report, I still felt I had let my ancestors down. I am not as financially successful as my parents were when they were my age, but my husband and I are encouraging and hopefully inspiring our children to be better off than we are. Your commentary inspired me to continue to work towards the dream. God has blessed me and I am going to do more to reach the financial goals that I once had. It's not too late! Thank you for bringing this report to the forefront. Hopefully others were inspired too. Thanks for all you do.

FROM THE BOOK OF BELIEVERS

FROM THE BOOK OF BELIEVERS PRAYERS AND PROMISES BY CLIFT RICHARDS

The “Faith Hall of Fame” Includes thousands of believers who took God at his word, taking hold of the promises and acting upon them.”

“By faith Enoch was translated; he never experience death... Is anything to hard for God?

What amazes me still are the reports constantly coming out weekly on Black America. Translation: Are we yet tired of it? What good report is there for Black America-certainly not the media?

Believers Prayers and Promises: Walk not as other Gentiles Walk. “This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk just as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart, who being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But you have not so earned Christ”. Ephesians 4:17-20

Me: God clearly wants our walk to be different from the life-styles of those who are in the world. He wants us to avoid hardness heart, callousness, sensuality, impurity, and GREED. Paul shows us how to walk as we should. Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man. Which was created according to God, in righteousness and holiness Eph: 4:23-24?

Me: Thousand of things are coming against the children of God-be there Black/White/Asian etc but especially Black America. I ask my self how much of these reports should you meditate on and the answer was none of them. I read them understand the contents of them and I examine my inner self- reevaluate ME and try and make myself better than yesterday. But what I won’t do is- believe in every doctrine/winds that tosses itself cross America. Renewing my mind is essential it is a must. I can’t consider myself a true Christian without renewing my mind and heart daily... Absorbing the truth is what keeps me going.

Me: Once again there are way too many positive things that we don’t focus on. Walk in wisdom know the truth… Seek out what builds you up and not tear you down. The world reports will continue to condemn and find fault in everything you do but the word of God is our answer. There are too many evil doctrines surfing the internet and any other places where it can condemn and destroy your mind body and soul.

We have to find neutral grounds/balance to continue on this journey. Okay we know certain things we need to address in Black America but we need more people encouraging, empowering each other on this journey. This is a hard journey -nothing from the world’s perspective is good enough. Finding fault is the world’s language/character. We have to separate ourselves from their report... ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Me: Condemnation is not our attire. We as Christians are the righteousness of God nothing less. I say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH…

Albert Einstein: “Evil does not exist. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love present in his heart. It’s like the cold that comes when there is no heat or darkness that comes when there is no light.
