The Covenant with Black America: Ten Years Later
By Tavis Smiley
In 2006, Tavis Smiley teamed up with other leaders in the Black community to create a national plan of action to address the ten most crucial issues facing African Americans. The Covenant with Black America, which became a #1 New York Times bestseller, ran the gamut from health care to criminal justice, affordable housing to education, voting rights to racial divides. But a decade later, Black men still fall to police bullets and brutality, Black women still die from preventable diseases, Black children still struggle to get a high quality education, the digital divide and environmental inequality still persist, and American cities from Ferguson to Baltimore burn with frustration. In short, the last decade has seen the evaporation of Black wealth, with Black fellow citizens having lost ground in nearly every leading economic category.
So Smiley calls for a renewal of The Covenant, presenting in this newedition the original action plan—with a new foreword and conclusion—alongside fresh data from the Indiana University School of Public & Environmental Affairs (SPEA) to underscore missed opportunities and the work that remains to be done. While life for far too many African Americans remains a struggle, the great freedom fighter Frederick Douglass was right: “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”
With Smiley leading the charge, the time has come to finally convert the trials and tribulations of Black America into the progress that all of America yearns for.
By Iyanla Venzant
Who do you trust? Everyone? No one? Some people? Sometimes?
Indeed, “learning to trust is one of life's most difficult lessons,” says #1 New York Times best-selling author Iyanla Vanzant. “That’s because trust is not a verb; it’s a noun. Trust is a state of mind and being. If you are serious about learning to trust, you need TNT—Tenacity, Nerve, and Time. But what if the real problem is not that we can’t trust other people; it’s that we can’t trust ourselves?”
In this compelling volume, filled with illuminating and heartrendingly powerful stories of broken trust, betrayal, and triumph, Iyanla demonstrates why the four essential trusts—Trust in Self, Trust in God, Trust in Others, and Trust in Life—are like oxygen: without them, none of us can survive.
Mastering these four essential trusts requires both a process and a practice. Life gives you the process through your experiences; people provide you the opportunity to practice. Whether you are faced with the specter of an unfaithful spouse, a manipulative colleague, a rebellious child, or a corrupt institution, Iyanla not only explores what trust really is, but she reveals why some of life’s most shocking trust violations offer us the most profound opportunities for personal growth and healing.
Iyanla’s pragmatic trust prescriptions—rooted in increased self-awareness, heightened intuition, honest communication, and disciplined spiritual practice—will not only challenge you to face your deepest fears, they will free you to cultivate new levels of increased authenticity, greater resilience, renewed peace, and more joy. This wise work will inspire you to “take the leap of trust,” because without trust there can be no peace of mind.

The African Americans
By Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Donald Yacovone
- THE AFRICAN AMERICANS: Many Rivers to Cross, by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and Donald Yacovone. The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross is the companion book to the six-part, six-hour documentary of the same name, airing on national, prime-time public television in the fall of 2013. The series is the first to air since 1968 that chronicles the full sweep of 500 years of African American history, from the origins of slavery on the African continent and the arrival of the first black conquistador, Juan Garrido, in Florida in 1513, through five centuries of remarkable historic events right up to today—when Barack Obama is serving his second term as President, yet our country remains deeply divided by race and class.
The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross delves into the multiplicity of cultural institutions, political strategies, and religious and social perspectives that African Americans have created in the half a millennium since their African ancestors first arrived on these shores. Like the television series, this book guides readers on an engaging journey through the Black Atlantic world—from Africa and Europe to the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States—to shed new light on what it has meant, and means, to be an African American.
By Rick Najera
In June 2014, ALMOST WHITE: Forced Confessions of a Latino in Hollywood, won first place for “Most Inspirational Non-Fiction Book” at the 2014 International Latino Book Awards in association with the American Library Association 2014 Conference.
In ALMOST WHITE: Forced Confessions of a Latino in Hollywood, award-winning writer, actor and director, comedian, playwright and producer, Rick Najera, explores what it means to be a Latino against the ever-changing backdrop of his life as a Hollywood creative. A bona fide chameleon, this LA-based everyman is ‘Mexican hyphen American’, or as he wryly puts it — he's almost white.
Driven by a satirical stream of consciousness, Najera’s journey from his San Diego childhood to his Hollywood adulthood exposes universal lessons from a range of characters both real and imagined. Lessons like learning to confront the limits we place on our imaginations, the need to take ownership of our own stories instead of settling for being mere performers in someone else’s distorted vision, and the necessity of rising every day to press forward—no matter what. “In the end,” says Najera,“perhaps it will be the power of the people and art, not politicians and politics that will redefine the Latino American dream.”

Through the iconic anthem “I Believe I Can Fly” and such sexy R&B mega-hits as “Bump N’ Grind,” “Ignition,” and “When a Woman’s Fed Up,” R. Kelly has proven to be one of the greatest musical talents of his generation. Yet his rollercoaster ride to the top has been as perilous as it has been exhilarating. In Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me, Kelly shares his life story through episodic tales and exclusive color photographs, exploring his meteoric rises and sudden falls.

Too Important to Fail: Saving America's
By Tavis Smiley Reports
“… a balanced account of solutions that we cannot allow to fail -- it could be the model for the transformational change that our democracy needs."
— John Thompson, award-winning historian, lobbyist and inner city teacher
Too Important to Fail: Saving America's Boys is the companion volume to the TAVIS SMILEY REPORTS PBS special. It examines an undeclared crisis in America-the staggering dropout rate among young black males. Nationwide fewer than 50% of young black males will graduate from high school. Low graduation rates combined with disproportionate rates of suspensions, expulsion, and high enrollment in special education classes, fuel this state of emergency. Tavis Smiley's candid conversations with frontline experts and educators, detention center administrators, and the boys themselves urges readers to ponder the societal and economic cost of losing another generation of uneducated young black males to lifetimes of prison and poverty. The Too Important to Fail Resource Guide lists 130 organizations who are committed to solving this monumental challenge.

Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority
By Tom Burrell
“Brainwashed is the most important book I will read this year. In fact, it may be the most important book I’ve read in the past decade.”
— Alfred Edmond, Jr., Editor-in-Chief of BlackEnterprise.com
Today, all Americans—Black and white—are deluged with a tsunami of words and images that promote the myth of Black inferiority. The seeds of this brilliant propaganda campaign were sown and skillfully fertilized during America’s lucrative slave trade. But in contemporary society, African Americans have become blind to the real roots of their own self-destructive behavior.
But Blacks aren’t the only ones blinded by the brainwash, says Burrell. When Harry Reid recently asserted Barack Obama’s political attractiveness lay in his lack of “Negro dialect” and light skin, he was vocalizing a belief many whites and Blacks silently, unconsciously accept: traits identified as “too Black” are viewed as signs of inferiority.
Brainwashed examines how every strand in the fabric of Black American life has been tainted by brainwashing—from family survival, entertainment, and sexuality, to health, education and leadership. In each chapter, Burrell skillfully connects the dots between the historical roots and their contemporary manifestations—the dynamic forces that perpetuate the myth of Black inferiority.
Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud
By Cornel West
Nominated for a 2010 NAACP Image Award
“Cornel West is one complex dude: brilliant scholar, political activist, committed Christian and soul brother to the bone.”
How did a man dubbed by some as “the world’s smartest Negro” go from childhood bully to class president and honor student in Sacramento, California, to the halls of Harvard? These questions and many more are answered in Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud, Cornel West’s long awaited life story, written with David Ritz. In this compelling and intimate exploration, West reveals the human heart behind the brilliant mind. He reflects on the joys of growing up in a home where education was a foundation stone, and why growing up in a neighborhood and not a ’hood dictates that he will always and forever be a “Shiloh Baptist kind of brother.”
In Brother West, Dr. West discusses his life’s great passions—the life of the mind and the prophetic Christian tradition that has shaped his deepest personal values of unconditional love and a courageous commitment to service. He shares lessons learned in the academy through his professorships at Union Theological Seminary, Yale Divinity School, Princeton, and Harvard, detailing the shocking and unexpected clash with Harvard’s controversial president Lawrence Summers and his decision to accept an invitation to return to Princeton in the aftermath.

Whether sharing his unique perspective in weekly commentaries on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, hosting BET specials and town hall events, or breaking ground on his recent independent documentary work in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq—Johnson, who “wakes up every day loving the work that I do,” is living his PERSONAL BEST.
Self-mastery isn’t easy. In his book, Everything I’m Not Made Me Everything I Am, Johnson beckons us on the road to self-discovery and takes us down the counter-intuitive road less traveled. He teaches us to ask not “Who Am I?” but rather “Who Am I Not?” Known for his straightforward, shoot-from-the-hip rapport with his audience, Johnson brings that same dynamic style to his debut book. He’s reached his personal best through a combination of life experiences learned and invaluable lessons taught by his mentors. These life lessons inspired him to create a powerful framework of proven “best practices” for those who need relevant examples and realistic help as they seek their own personal best—regardless of their age or life stage. Johnson dares us to make sure we aren’t living somebody else’s dream.

America I AM Black Facts: The Timelines of African American History, 1601-2008
By Quintard Taylor
Time is the great equalizer. No person, race, culture, or nation stands beyond its reach or can alter its inevitable progress. Timelines, lists of events in chronological order as they happened, allow us to understand history as the evolution of events and eras. In the case of African American history, which has often been subjected to blatant and subtle distortion, a timeline can both set the record straight and expand our knowledge in new and exciting ways.
America I AM Black Facts is a companion volume to the four-year touring museum America I AM: The African American Imprint. It offers an introduction to the rich, complex, tragic, and triumphant history of the 40 million people of African descent over five centuries in what is now the United States. This fascinating volume features timelines that chronicle the indelible imprint of African Americans on the life, history and cultures of the world.
