No Gender Equality Among MBAs
Fri, 04/20/2007 - 15:40 | Gender Equality
Pay gaps are widening for college-educated women according to a study of Northwestern MBAs:
According to Paul Martorana, assistant professor of management at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin, the mere presence of a career mentor does not consistently help women break through the glass ceiling when it comes to achieving pay equity and attaining executive roles. In their study, “The Persistent Gender Gap Among Protégés,” Martorana and his colleagues, Jeanne Brett of Northwestern University and Catherine Tinsley of Georgetown University, find the gap has generally stayed the same. And in some cases, despite the presence of mentors, the income disparity between men and women has increased. It's 2007, but we're still failing to find gender equality in the workplace. Why do you think that's the case?

I believe that women have not
I believe that women have not reached parity in the work place for three reasons.
The first reason is an old boys network that protects and promotes its own. Men not only work together but socialize together. They do business deals on the golf course and women are not included. Those same men push and promote each other up the corporate ladder. To include women in this old boys club would not only be a sacred betrayal for men but a threat to their own positions.
The second reason I believe we haven't achieved parity is because of the continued backward perception of women. We still hear people referring to strong women as Bs. Hillary Clinton has to cry to prove to people she has a heart. Why? Why didn't the other candidates have to cry? We assign heart to women and brains to men and until that truly changes we will continue to get the "less than" treatment.
Lastly, I believe that women themselves are responsible for their lack of parity. Women tend not to gather as a force when inequalities arise. Why? After working in management positions for years I have seen the reasons range from apathy to a lack of willingness to rock the boat, to protecting their little gain, to being outright suspicious of other women.
I think with the women's rights movement we figure we've come a long way and now we can take a breath. As with any rights won, including civil rights, we have to realize that any ground gained has to be protected, continually fought for, and renewed by visionaries who can see where the next battle is and lead us there.
Where is our new Gloria? She won't come until we have another reason to say "Enough!!!"
I am writing this in February
I am writing this in February 2008. The equal rights amendment has STILL not been passed! Women, nor minority men, don't have to be paid equal because it is "not written" to do so. I am so passionate about this issue, however, I will keep it short and sweet. We are getting a new president this year. It looks like it may be Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Obama. Both "minorities", she being a woman and him being African American. So with this in mind, I challenge both with the question "if either of you becomes President of the United States, what action will you take to pass Equal Rights Amendment"?
I struggle every day to
I struggle every day to maintain my executive position because I'm always trying to do better, be faster and assimilate with the boys without crossing any lines.
I just found out I make less money than all the men. Hmm why doesn't this surprise me?
Someday it will be fair. I still work twice as hard and it is only because I believe God has a hand in helping me I know I will survive. I am a single parent and all the men I work for support their wives. Thankfully I can afford child care but I can't imagine women that can not. How can a woman get ahead when all the odds are against us? (heavenly intervention)
I am blessed with this opportunity. Now I'll leave the unfairness to be resolved by God. Oh yes, and radical change in our politics today.
Brothers and Sisters, First
Brothers and Sisters,
First and foremost, when are we ever going to realize that this is a "male-guided" Anglo-Saxon society, and secondly, it is a society that is headed by a "Good 'Ol Boy" mentality. I don't believe it has anything to do with the differences in females and males, I believe it has all to do with what I just stated. If and when that changes, women, racism, geocide, war, famine and so forth will have to cease, and the only way it will ever happen is for all of us, all races, all nationalities, to come together in a committed intellectual force to break down the wall of this "male-guided" society.
Peace,
Laurie
In some cases I believe that
In some cases I believe that people really do believe that a man's worth and intelligence is greater than that of his female counterpart; and then we have people that belive a man just automatically has more personal duties than a woman and he just needs more money. Both of which are a bunch of crap. But until it is challeneged the sexism will remain.
